The Different Styles of Amish Furniture

By Tobin Dimmitt

One of the great things about Amish furniture is the huge selection and variety they come in. Some people have misconception that all Amish furniture looks and functions the same. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth, as there are many different styles and types of Amish furniture produced today; here we’ll take a look at some of the most popular styles of Amish furniture.

The great things about Amish furniture is the huge selection and variety

Mission Style

The mission style is arguably one of the most popular types of Amish furniture. It features clean, straight lines and oftentimes uses an outgoing flare towards the legs of the furniture. You’ll notice that most chairs, bed frames and other mission style furniture have a back consisting of many lines instead of it being completely open. Mission style cabinets and other large furniture oftentimes use arched doors to give a touch of elegance and overall appeal to the piece.

Shaker Style

Another popular type of Amish furniture is the shaker style. This style is mot known for its mix of simplicity and functionality. Typically, shaker style furniture is compact, simple, and performs the job it was intended for. Shaker style dressers and chest of drawers usually have more of a boxy look than other styles of Amish furniture. Don’t let this fool you into thinking they are low quality, though. On the contrary, shaker style is made with functionality in mind, so any piece you purchase is sure to perform better than you probably expect.

Queen Anne or Traditional Style

If you want a slightly more stylish and elegant type of Amish furniture, you should take a look at the Queen Anne and Traditional styles. This style of furniture puts more emphasis on the look and design than other types. Instead of having straight lines for functionality, the Queen Anne style uses more curves, details and moldings. Some of the most commonly constructed types of Amish furniture which feature the Queen Anne Style are dining room tables and chairs.

Contemporary Style

The last type of Amish furniture we’ll take a look at is the contemporary style. This might sound a little contradictory, as most people associate the Amish community with more traditional styles. Basically, the contemporary style of furniture creates by the Amish focuses on clean lines and designs. While the lines aren’t as straight as the mission style, they aren’t as curvy as the Queen Anne style either.

Hopefully, this will give you a better understanding as to what the different styles of Amish furniture are.
